Bergsig Patmos Chenin Blanc 2025
Bergsig Estate is a family-owned wine farm in the Breedekloof region of the Breede River Valley, where the Drakenstein and Hex River Mountains meet. The Lategan family has farmed the estate since 1843, and seven generations later the family continues to grow grapes and make wine on the property. The mountain surroundings provide a cooler growing environment, while mountain water and the varied soils of the Breede River Valley contribute to the estate’s distinctive growing conditions. The Patmos Chenin Blanc Reserve forms part of Bergsig’s Lategan Reserve Collection, which celebrates the family’s history. The name Patmos, also recorded as Padmos, refers to the sailing ship that brought the Bergsig forefather Johann Haerman Lategan to the Cape in 1735. The 2025 Chenin Blanc is hand-picked from a single vineyard, spends 60 days on its lees for added complexity, and is fermented and matured for nine months in 300-litre French oak barrels.
Colour: Pale lemon-gold with a bright, youthful appearance.
Nose: Aromas of dried apricot and ripe citrus lead into yellow orchard fruit, with delicate notes of orange blossom and acacia honey. Gentle toast and butter notes from the French oak add another layer without overpowering the fruit.
Palate: Dry and medium-bodied, with generous apricot and ripe citrus flavours supported by lively acidity. The nine months in French oak and time on the lees give the wine a creamy, rounded texture, while subtle toast and savoury notes add depth. The acidity keeps the richness fresh and focused rather than heavy.
Finish: Long and savoury, with lingering citrus, ripe orchard fruit and gentle toast. There is enough freshness and structure to make this an excellent food wine, while the creamy texture gives the finish a pleasing softness.
- Food Pairing : The combination of fresh acidity, creamy texture and subtle French oak makes Bergsig Patmos Chenin Blanc Reserve 2025 particularly versatile at the table. Try it with roast or grilled chicken with a fruit-based sauce, pork fillet, grilled line fish, prawns or creamy seafood dishes, or a mildly spiced couscous salad. The ripe citrus and apricot flavours work naturally with fruit and spice, while the acidity cuts through creamy sauces and the oak and lees-derived texture have enough weight to stand alongside richer dishes.
