Benguela Cove Catalina Semillon 2023
Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate is situated on the shores of Walker Bay near Hermanus, where vineyards benefit from the cooling influence of both the Atlantic Ocean and the estate's expansive lagoon. This maritime environment slows ripening, helping grapes retain freshness while developing flavour concentration. Benguela Cove is committed to producing estate-grown wines that express their origin, with a strong focus on site-specific viticulture and sustainable farming practices. The Catalina Semillon comes from a tiny single-vineyard block of just 0.9 hectares, planted on clay and shale soils. Fermentation and maturation in French oak barrels add texture and complexity while allowing the vineyard character to remain at the forefront. The result is a wine that reflects both the precision of modern winemaking and the distinctive personality of Walker Bay.
Colour: Bright straw gold with a clear, luminous appearance and subtle green reflections.
Nose: Lemon zest, ripe citrus and white peach lead the aromatics, followed by notes of lanolin, baking spice, toasted brioche and a gentle hint of custard and vanilla from oak maturation. More savoury nuances emerge with time in the glass.
Palate: The Benguela Cove Catalina Semillon 2023 is textured and layered, with concentrated citrus fruit supported by a creamy mid-palate. Flavours of lemon tart, stone fruit and subtle spice are balanced by vibrant acidity that keeps the wine focused and energetic. Oak influence adds depth without overwhelming the fruit.
Finish: Long and persistent, finishing with citrus peel, gentle spice and a saline freshness that reflects its cool-climate coastal origin.
- Food Pairing : The richness and texture of Benguela Cove Catalina Semillon 2023 make it a natural partner for roast chicken with herbs, grilled line fish, creamy seafood pasta and pork dishes with apple or stone-fruit accompaniments. Its bright acidity cuts through richer sauces while the wine's layered citrus and savoury notes complement delicate seafood and poultry beautifully. For a local pairing, try it with Cape Malay fish curry, where the wine's freshness balances gentle spice while its texture stands up to the dish's complexity.
