Bellevue Reserve Pinotage 2021
Bellevue Wine Estate in Stellenbosch occupies a special place in South African wine history. The estate was among the pioneers of Pinotage, planting one of the country’s earliest commercial vineyards of the variety in the 1950s - helping establish what would become South Africa’s signature red grape.
Today, the family-owned estate continues to focus on terroir-driven wines that reflect the granite-rich soils and warm Mediterranean climate of Stellenbosch. Many of the vineyards are bush vines grown on decomposed granite and shale soils, which naturally limit yields while concentrating flavour.
The Bellevue Reserve Pinotage 2021 is crafted from carefully selected parcels of older vines, with fruit chosen for depth and structure. After fermentation, the wine underwent spontaneous malolactic fermentation and matured for around 22 months in French oak barrels (50% new, 50% second-fill), allowing the Pinotage fruit to develop complexity while maintaining the variety’s characteristic vibrancy.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a dense core and a subtle garnet edge.
Nose:
Lifted aromas of violet and cedar lead the bouquet, followed by raspberry, maraschino cherry and darker berry fruit. Gentle notes of oak spice and a savoury undertone add complexity.
Palate:
Full-bodied and structured, showing concentrated flavours of dark berries, sweet-tart raspberry and cherry layered with hints of cocoa, roasted coffee and spice. The tannins are firm but fine-grained, giving the wine shape without overwhelming the fruit.
Finish:
Long and savoury with lingering berry fruit, cedar and a subtle umami note.

Grilled Karoo lamb chops with rosemary work beautifully, as the wine’s dark fruit and spice complement the richness of the meat. A slow-braised beef short rib or oxtail stew echoes the wine’s savoury undertones and benefits from its firm tannin structure. Game dishes such as venison pie are also excellent partners, while a mature hard cheese — like aged cheddar or a strong washed-rind cheese - highlights the wine’s subtle oak and earthy complexity.
