Arendskloof Tannat 2022 (Diners)
Arendskloof Wines forms part of the Eagle’s Cliff winery, located in the scenic Breede River Valley between Villiersdorp and Worcester. Surrounded by mountain ranges and benefiting from warm daytime temperatures balanced by cooler evening conditions, the area is well suited to producing structured red wines with concentration and depth.
The valley’s diverse soils and Mediterranean climate encourage full ripening of robust varieties such as Tannat, a grape originally from southwest France and now increasingly planted in South Africa for its colour, structure and ageing potential.
In the cellar, Arendskloof focuses on extracting the grape’s natural richness while softening its naturally firm tannins through careful fermentation and oak maturation. The result is a powerful yet approachable expression of Tannat that reflects the warm Breede River terroir and the estate’s practical, fruit-driven winemaking style.
Colour:
Deep, inky ruby with a dense core, typical of the naturally dark-skinned Tannat grape.
Nose:
Rich aromas of ripe plum, blackberry and dark berry fruit, followed by hints of brown spice, cocoa and earthy undertones.
Palate:
Full-bodied and structured with concentrated dark fruit flavours. Firm but ripe tannins give the wine grip, while notes of prune, black cherry and dark chocolate add depth.
Finish:
Long and bold with lingering dark fruit and savoury spice supported by integrated oak.
- Food Pairing : The robust structure of Arendskloof Tannat 2022 makes it particularly well suited to rich, protein-driven dishes. It pairs naturally with grilled steak, lamb chops or venison, where the wine’s firm tannins soften alongside the richness of the meat. Slow-braised beef or oxtail also works well, as the wine’s dark fruit and spice complement the depth of slow-cooked flavours. For a South African favourite, try it with a smoky braai - the charred, savoury notes mirror the wine’s earthy complexity.
