Anura Reserve Malbec 2024
Anura Reserve Malbec 2024 is produced by Anura Vineyards in the Simonsberg-Paarl area of the Western Cape. Set among the vineyards and mountain landscapes of Paarl, the estate benefits from a warm growing climate that encourages ripe fruit development, while the surrounding elevations and varied soils contribute to the character of its wines. Malbec is traditionally associated with Argentina, but it also thrives in selected South African vineyard sites, where it can develop concentrated dark fruit flavours, generous texture and a distinctive savoury edge. At Anura, the Reserve Malbec is made with careful fruit selection and hands-on cellar work to build depth without losing the variety's expressive fruit character. The grapes are hand-sorted before fermentation in a small open-top tank. Cold maceration helps develop colour and aroma, while regular pump-overs and punch-downs encourage the extraction of flavour and structure. The wine is then matured for 20 months in French oak barrels, with 30% new oak and the remainder in third- and fourth-fill barrels. This measured use of oak adds complexity and texture while allowing the ripe fruit to remain central.
Colour: Deep, inky ruby red with rich purple hues.
Nose: Generous aromas of ripe plum and mulberry lead, accompanied by subtle marzipan notes. As the wine opens, darker fruit and hints of liquorice and oak spice add complexity.
Palate: Full-bodied and generously textured, with layers of ripe dark fruit, plum and mulberry. A velvety mouthfeel is supported by firm but approachable tannins, while liquorice spice and hints of dried peach add depth. The 20 months of French oak maturation contribute subtle complexity, allowing the fruit to remain the focus.
Finish: Long and smooth, with lingering dark fruit, liquorice spice and dried peach. The rounded texture and gentle oak influence leave a warm, satisfying impression.
- Food Pairing : Anura Reserve Malbec 2024 is a natural match for grilled rib-eye steak, braaied lamb chops, slow-cooked beef stew or a hearty tomato-based pasta. Its concentrated plum and mulberry flavours complement the savoury richness of grilled meat, while the liquorice spice and oak add depth alongside smoky, charred flavours. For a meat-free pairing, try roasted aubergine with lentils and smoked paprika, or a mature cheese board with sweet preserves. Its generous texture and rounded tannins make it particularly well suited to a relaxed South African braai.
