Amandelboord Pinotage 2022 (Diners)
The Amandelboord Pinotage 2022 comes from De Grendel Estate in the Durbanville wine region just north of Cape Town. Vineyards here sit on the western slopes of the Tygerberg Hills, only a few kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean. Cooling sea breezes from Table Bay moderate the warm growing conditions, helping the grapes ripen slowly while preserving natural freshness and structure.
The wine takes its name from the almond orchard that once stood where the vineyard is planted today. Grapes are harvested by hand and fermented with regular punch-downs to extract colour and flavour before undergoing malolactic fermentation. The wine then matures for around 11â12 months in a combination of French and American oak barrels, adding subtle spice and texture while maintaining the character of Pinotage.
Â
Colour:
Deep ruby with dark purple hues, showing good concentration in the glass.
Â
Nose:
Aromatic layers of blackberry, black cherry and plum lead the bouquet, followed by notes of clove, vanilla and subtle oak spice.
Â
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied with rich dark fruit at the core. Flavours of cherry, plum and cocoa are supported by fine-grained tannins and balanced acidity, creating a structured yet approachable style.
Â
Finish:
Long and polished, with lingering notes of dark fruit, spice and gentle oak.
- Food Pairing : The depth and spice of Amandelboord Pinotage 2022 make it a natural partner for robust, flavourful dishes. It pairs particularly well with braaied meats such as sticky pork ribs or grilled steak, where the wineâs tannins balance the richness of the dish. Slow-cooked beef stew or venison also works beautifully, as the wineâs dark fruit complements savoury flavours. For a vegetarian option, grilled mushroom steaks with mature cheddar highlight the wineâs earthy undertones and subtle oak spice.
