Alvi's Drift Verreaux Pinotage 2023 (Top 10)
Pinotage
Description
Alvi’s Drift is a family-owned estate situated on the banks of the Breede River near Worcester in the Western Cape. The estate has been farmed by the Van der Merwe family for generations, with vineyards benefiting from abundant mountain water, warm sunny days and cooling evening temperatures that help grapes ripen evenly while retaining freshness. This balance is particularly important for Pinotage, allowing the variety to show ripe fruit without becoming overly heavy or rustic.
The Verreaux range is named after the Verreaux’s eagle indigenous to the area and reflects Alvi’s Drift’s focus on expressive, fruit-driven wines with a modern Cape style. The winery combines careful vineyard management with a gentle approach in the cellar to preserve varietal purity and softness. Oak maturation is used with restraint to support texture and complexity while allowing the natural richness of the fruit to remain central.
Colour:
Deep ruby red with vibrant garnet edges.
Nose:
Expressive aromas of ripe blackberry, plum and black cherry are layered with notes of mocha, sweet spice, smoky oak and a touch of rooibos tea.

Finish:
Rounded and lingering, with notes of dark chocolate, soft spice and ripe black fruit carrying through the finish.

Alvi's Drift Verreaux Pinotage 2023 (Top 10)
- Food Pairing : Alvi’s Drift Verreaux Pinotage 2023 pairs naturally with smoky, savoury dishes that suit the variety’s ripe fruit and soft spice profile. It works particularly well with sticky braaied ribs, boerewors, slow-cooked lamb or a beef bobotie, where the wine’s gentle tannins and dark fruit complement rich, caramelised flavours. The subtle smokiness also makes it a good match for grilled mushrooms or mature gouda cheese served as part of a relaxed sharing board.
