Ernie Els Signature 2018 1.5L in Gift Box
Ernie Els Wines is situated on the slopes of the Helderberg in Stellenbosch, where a combination of decomposed granite soils, elevation and cooling False Bay breezes creates ideal conditions for structured red wines. Founded by former professional golfer Ernie Els alongside winemaker Louis Strydom, the estate has become known for producing bold yet polished Bordeaux-style blends with strong ageing potential.
Â
The Signature blend is the estateâs flagship wine and reflects a clear Old-World influence interpreted through Stellenbosch fruit intensity. The 2018 vintage was shaped by dry conditions across the Cape, producing smaller berries with concentrated flavour and firm tannin structure. Each varietal component was vinified separately before maturation in French oak barrels for around 20 months, allowing complexity and balance to develop before blending. Presented here in a 1.5L magnum format with gift box packaging, the wine is particularly well suited to long-term cellaring and celebratory occasions.
Â
Colour:
Deep garnet red with dense ruby highlights.
Â
Nose:
Blackcurrant, dark cherry and plum aromas lead the nose, layered with cedar, cigar box, graphite and baking spice. Subtle notes of cocoa, dried herbs and crushed violets add further depth and complexity.
Â
Palate:
Full-bodied and structured, with concentrated dark fruit framed by firm yet polished tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon provides backbone and longevity, while Merlot softens the texture and Cabernet Franc adds aromatic lift. The oak is integrated and supportive, contributing notes of vanilla, cedar and spice without overshadowing the fruit. Despite its power, the wine retains freshness and precision through the palate.
Â
Finish:
Long, dry and savoury, with lingering notes of cassis, dark chocolate, cedar and fine spice.
- Food Pairing : Ernie Els Signature 2018 pairs naturally with rich, slow-cooked and flame-grilled dishes that can stand up to its structure and depth. Roast beef, ribeye steak or lamb shoulder work particularly well alongside the wineâs firm tannins and savoury oak character, while venison or oxtail bring out its darker fruit and spice notes. Mature hard cheeses such as aged cheddar or comtĂ© complement the wineâs texture and complexity beautifully. The magnum format also makes it particularly well suited to long-table dining and celebratory meals where the wine has time to evolve in the glass.
