De Meye Raised by Rain 2021
De Meye is a small, family-owned farm in the Muldersvlei area of Stellenbosch, between Stellenbosch and Paarl. The vineyards sit on mainly decomposed granite soils, which tend to give whites with good natural acidity and a quietly mineral backbone. The cellar philosophy is low-intervention and detail-focused: modest scale, a strong connection to specific vineyard blocks and a preference for honest, food-friendly wines over polished, commercial styles. Raised by Rain fits into this approach – typically a more artisanal, naturally inclined white, often from older vineyards, with gentle handling, ambient ferments and a light touch on oak where used. The aim is to capture texture, subtlety and a sense of place rather than loud fruit or sweetness.
Colour:
Pale to medium straw with a light golden tint, bright but slightly deeper than simple, tank-only whites, hinting at some lees work or skin contact.
Nose:
Pear, yellow apple and soft stone fruit lead, with lemon peel and a hint of grapefruit. There are gentle layers of florals, a touch of beeswax or lanolin and a savoury, almost nutty edge from lees contact or old oak, giving more complexity than a straightforward fruity white.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with a rounded, slightly waxy texture and fresh but not sharp acidity. The palate shows ripe pear, baked apple and white peach, balanced by citrus pith and a subtle herbal or fennel note. The wine feels dry and quietly layered, with the weight and savoury detail to work well at the table. Oak, if present, is discreet – more about shape and texture than flavour. Overall, it feels calm, grounded and more about nuance than showiness.
Finish:
Medium to long, with lingering stone fruit, lemon pith and a gentle, savoury almond or waxy note.
- Food Pairing : De Meye Raised by Rain 2021 has enough texture and savoury depth to handle richer dishes, while the acidity keeps everything in check. It’s very good with roast chicken, pork belly or grilled pork chops, where the wine’s weight and subtle stone fruit notes match the richness without feeling heavy. It pairs comfortably with creamy seafood pasta, mussels in a white wine and herb broth, or a mildly spiced Cape Malay chicken or fish curry – the gentle spice and savoury edge in the wine echo the aromatics in the dish. For simpler meals, think butternut and feta salad, grilled aubergine with olive oil and herbs, or a cheese board featuring semi-hard cheeses like Gouda and Gruyère; the combination of freshness and texture makes it a flexible partner at the table.
