Gluwein

Since the icy weather has arrived, it’s time we look at that popular after-ski drink, gluhwein. Perhaps not as popular in the southern hemisphere - where everyone thinks it doesn’t really get cold - it’s a delicious way to end a chilly day. Made with mulling spices it can be drunk hot or warm, I guess it all depends on how cold you are.

Here’s our favourite recipe for gluhwein. But remember, since you’re drinking your wine warm, it will go straight to your head.

1 bottle red wine
1 orange
2 sticks cinnamon
3 cloves
2 tbsp brown sugar or honey
4 slices orange rind, to serve

Slowly heat the red wine in a pot. Make sure not to bring the wine to a boil, otherwise the alcohol will evaporate.
Slice the orange and add it to the wine, with the cinnamon, cloves and sugar.
Stir until the sugar has dissolved and leave to simmer for about 15 minutes.
Remove the cinnamon, cloves and orange slices and pour the wine into glasses and garnish with a thin slice of orange rind.
