I walked into the casino like James Bond. I sat down at the roulette table and opposite me, would you believe it, there was this blonde in a low-cut dress with bare shoulders. I winked at her. She didn’t respond though.
The croupier called for bets. I put a chip on number 17. I wanted to wink at the girl again but she was placing a chip on black – a big chip, one of those heavy, rectangular affairs. The ball bounced around in the wheel and settled on Black 28. The girl collected. I didn’t. This doesn’t happen to James Bond, I thought. But I decided to have another go. I put five chips on red. I didn’t count them out one by one. I put them on all at once, cool-like, like it didn’t mean anything to me. I looked up at the blonde and my heart sank. Her big chip, and her winnings, were on black.
Black came up again. I got up from the table in disgust. So this was how the evening was going to end. I had been losing all day, in fact. That afternoon at the races too. Unlike Bond I lost on every horse. Not even a second or third place.
Later, at the casino bar, I found the blonde sipping a red wine. “I’ll have what she’s having,” I said to the barman. I pulled myself up to look a little taller but my courage was slipping. I took a sip of the wine. I turned to her and said, “Nice Shiraz, isn’t it?”
“Actually it’s a Cabernet Sauvignon” she replied.
I took another sip. “Damn, you’re right,” I said. “Hell, everything’s gone wrong today.” I looked into my glass. “I can’t even get the wine right.” Bond of course knows all about wine.
I was getting up to go when she put her hand on my arm. “Your eyes are kind of cute,” she said. I stayed and we finished the bottle. Glen Carlou Gravel Quarry Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 it was. It has to be one of South Africa’s really great red wines.
