What is the Point of Blind Tasting?

Every week, Wine-of-the-Month’s panel of expert wine judges blind taste over 40 wines. That’s over 2000 wines every year. But why all the fuss over blind tasting? It’s quite simple; to find the best wines without the influence of the label, the price, the charming winemaker, the idyllic farm or the delightful lunch you enjoyed while visiting.

How does it work?

Blind tasting removes all of these aspects from the actual judging of the wine in order to find only the best. But how does it actually work? Every Monday evening our panel of independent judges walk into our Tasting Room, to find 40 glasses of pre-poured wine laid out in front of them. The only details the judges are given is the vintage and variety, or composition in the case of a blend, and the residual sugar and alcohol volume. From there, it’s over to their palates. At Wine-of-the-Month Club we are not concerned with individual scores but with a general consensus among a large number of the judges.

The judges then taste and score all the wines based on what really matters —what is in the glass!  That’s how Wine-of-the-Month finds you the very best scoring wines that make it onto our site and into your Club box.

Who is on the panel?

Wine-of-the-Month’s panel consists of 11 expert wine judges, from industry experts David Biggs and Dr Winifred Bowman, to the Club’s Founder Colin Collard, and renowned Sommelier Tinashe Nyadudoka. The panel also includes well-known expert wine judges PJ Buks Nel, Margaret Fundira, Gregory Mutambe, Irina von Holdt, Clive Torr, Christine Rudman and Claude Felbert.

Whether you are joining a club or buying wine online when the desire arises, we only offer our Panel’s very best picks. Visit Wine-of-the-Month to buy wine online and get it delivered right to your front door.

Now, all that’s left for you to do is to open your box, sit back, relax, and enjoy a glass of something spectacular!
