Zandvliet Hill of Enon Shiraz 2021
Shiraz / Syrah
Description
Zandvliet Wine Estate has been synonymous with Shiraz in South Africa for more than 40 vintages, making it one of the country’s most enduring producers of this varietal. Its vineyards lie in the limestone-rich soils of the Robertson Wine Valley, where warm days and cool nights help Shiraz grapes develop concentrated flavour with natural freshness.
The Hill of Enon block is a distinctive site on the estate, planted on ancient rocky outcrops of Enon Formation - a mix of pebbles, limestone and clay - that consistently yields grapes of depth and nuance. The 2021 vintage was handled with careful whole-bunch fermentation and extended oak maturation to integrate spice and texture without overwhelming the inherent fruit.
Colour:
Deep ruby with violet tinges at the rim.
Nose:
A brooding bouquet of blackberry and plum leads, layered with blueberry, licorice and dark chocolate. Beneath the fruit, subtle notes of black pepper and cigar box add complexity.
Palate:
Full-bodied and delicately textured, the wine offers rich dark fruit flavours - think bramble and black cherry - with soft spice and integrated oak. Tannins are firm yet refined, giving structure and a smooth mouthfeel without heaviness.
Finish:
The finish is long and velvety, with lingering dark fruit, a hint of smoky savouriness and polished spice.

- Food Pairing : Zandvliet Hill of Enon Shiraz 2021 pairs beautifully with richly flavoured dishes that mirror its dark fruit and spice profile. Grilled lamb cutlets seasoned with rosemary and cracked pepper echo the wine’s earthy and peppery characters, while a slow-braised beef brisket or potjie enhances its plush fruit and structured tannins. For a contrasting match, aged Gouda or mature cheddar brings savoury richness that balances the wine’s persistent finish and elegant texture.
