Thelema’s Sutherland range focuses on cooler-climate sites, with this Syrah sourced from Elgin - one of South Africa’s most consistently fresh and slow-ripening regions. Elevated vineyards, maritime influence and Bokkeveld shale soils contribute to wines with natural acidity, aromatic detail and restrained alcohol.
At Sutherland, the approach is measured and site driven. Grapes are hand-sorted and fermented in stainless steel before spending around 18 months in French oak, mostly older barrels to preserve fruit clarity. The result is a Syrah that leans towards elegance and savoury complexity rather than sheer weight - a style that reflects both Elgin’s climate and a more classical interpretation of the varietal.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a dark core and a slight purple edge, indicating youthful concentration.
Nose:
Blackberry and plum lead, followed by violet, black pepper and a touch of smoky cedar. Subtle savoury notes - cured meat and graphite - add depth.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with a fresh, lifted structure. Juicy black cherry and dark berry fruit sit alongside vibrant acidity, giving the wine energy and definition. Tannins are fine and structured, supporting a layered palate that moves between fruit, spice and savoury detail.
Finish:
Long and clean, with lingering black fruit, white pepper and a gently savoury, coastal edge.
