The Drift Gift Horse 2018
Barbera
Description
The Drift Estate is a small, family-run winery high in the Overberg Highlands of the Western Cape, where cool breezes from the nearby Southern Ocean and ancient soils of uplifted sandstone and decomposed granite give distinctive character to its wines. Winemaker Bruce Jack crafts each bottling with meticulous attention to site and variety, frequently from parcels no larger than a hectare. The Gift Horse 2018 is a single-vineyard Barbera that reflects this thoughtful, terroir-driven approach: vines that struggled in their early years now yield concentrated, balanced fruit, handled with precision from the vineyard through fermentation and maturation to capture both power and freshness.
Colour: Deep, intense purple-ruby that hints at concentrated red and black fruit.
Nose: A compelling bouquet of lush mulberry, black cherry and ripe plum, interwoven with spice, white pepper and subtle fynbos herbal notes.
Palate: Rich yet balanced, the palate shows expansive dark fruit flavours framed by vibrant natural acidity and supple tannins. Notes of black cherry and blackberry mingle with earthy spice and a hint of savoury herb, carrying through with freshness and depth.
Finish: Long and poised, with lingering dark fruit, spice and a refreshing line of acidity that keeps the wine lively.

The Drift Gift Horse 2018
- Food Pairing : The Drift Gift Horse Barbera 2018 pairs beautifully with hearty, flavour-rich dishes that can stand up to its intensity and balance of fruit and spice. Try it with a slow-braised beef shin or braised lamb shoulder with rosemary and black pepper, where the acidity lifts the richness and the spice echoes the wine’s savoury notes. It’s also excellent with porcini-mushroom ragù on pappardelle or grilled game birds glazed with berry-based sauces - dishes that resonate with the wine’s layered fruit and herb character.
- Drink before: Drink now through the mid-2030s. Thanks to structured acidity and tannins this wine can age gracefully with proper cellaring.
