Rikus Neethling Red Blend 2024
Rikus Neethling Red Blend 2024 is made by Rikus Neethling of Bizoe Wines, the boutique family wine producer based in the Helderberg, Somerset West. Bizoe's philosophy is deliberately hands-off: “less is more”, with limited quantities, minimal interference and a focus on allowing the character of each vineyard site to come through. For the 2024 Red Blend, Sangiovese and Shiraz bring together two quite different personalities. Sangiovese contributes bright red fruit and natural freshness, while Shiraz adds darker fruit, spice and depth. The result is a distinctly Cape interpretation of a Mediterranean-inspired red blend, with fruit and freshness at its centre.
Colour: Luminous cherry red with bright ruby hues and a slight translucency in the glass.
Nose: Highly aromatic, opening with ripe cherry, raspberry and pomegranate, followed by rose petal and red-fruit tea. Beneath the bright red fruit are darker notes of bramble, liquorice and subtle spice, with hints of lavender and baking spice adding complexity.
Palate: Dry and medium-bodied, with lively acidity giving the wine a fresh, mouth-watering character. Juicy strawberry, cherry and other ripe red fruits fill the palate, while fine-grained, silky tannins provide shape without becoming heavy. A subtle savoury and earthy character, with a touch of olive-brine, adds another dimension and keeps the generous fruit focused.
Finish: Medium in length, with fresh red fruit, a gentle savoury edge and fine tannins leaving a clean, pleasantly dry impression.
- Food Pairing : The Rikus Neethling Red Blend 2024's fresh acidity and fine tannins make it particularly versatile at the table. Try it with spaghetti or tagliatelle with a tomato-based meat sauce, Italian-style sausages, beef burgers, roast chicken with herbs, or a simple South African braai. The red-fruit character works naturally with tomato and grilled flavours, while the Shiraz brings enough darker fruit and spice to stand up to savoury, smoky dishes. Its freshness also makes it a good partner for richer food without making the combination feel heavy.
