Description
Rietvallei Wine Estate lies in the Robertson Valley along the Breede River, a region known for its limestone-rich soils and warm, dry climate. These calcareous soils, combined with significant sunshine and cool evening temperatures, help produce grapes with concentration while maintaining natural acidity - conditions particularly well suited to Bordeaux varieties.
The Estéanna range represents Rietvallei’s flagship red blend, named after the matriarch of the Burger family who has farmed this land for generations. The 2019 vintage draws fruit from carefully selected vineyards planted in 1998 and 2003, farmed for low yields and optimal ripeness. Fermentation takes place with minimal intervention before the wine spends around 24 months maturing in French oak barrels. The result is a structured Robertson red that balances ripe fruit with classic oak complexity, reflecting both the estate’s heritage and a traditional Bordeaux-inspired style.
Colour:
Deep ruby red with a dense core and youthful garnet edges.
Nose:
Aromatic layers of cherry, cassis and dark berries lead the bouquet, followed by subtle notes of violet, cedar and toasted oak.
Palate:
Full-bodied with concentrated blackcurrant and cherry flavours supported by hints of vanilla and dark chocolate from oak maturation. The tannins are firm yet polished, giving the wine structure while allowing the fruit to remain expressive and balanced.
Finish:
Long and savoury, with lingering dark fruit, cedar spice and refined tannins.
