Quoin Rock Black Series Red Blend 2017
Blend : Red
Description
Quoin Rock Wine Estate lies high on the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in Stellenbosch, where altitude, decomposed granite soils and cooling Atlantic breezes combine to create one of the Cape’s most compelling terroirs for structured red wines. The estate has undergone a significant revival over the past decade, with meticulous vineyard redevelopment and a focus on low yields to maximise fruit concentration.
The Black Series range represents Quoin Rock’s flagship philosophy - small-batch wines crafted from carefully selected vineyard parcels. Grapes are hand-harvested and sorted before fermentation, with maturation in French oak barrels to develop structure and complexity without overwhelming the fruit. The result is a wine that reflects both Stellenbosch’s classical Bordeaux-inspired tradition and a contemporary precision in winemaking.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a garnet edge, showing both concentration and early signs of maturation.
Nose:
Layered aromas of blackcurrant, ripe plum and dark cherry lead the bouquet, followed by cedar, graphite and hints of spice from oak maturation. Subtle notes of dried herbs and tobacco add further complexity.
Palate:
Full-bodied with a dense core of dark fruit. Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure and firm tannins, while Merlot softens the mid-palate with plum and red berry richness. Shiraz contributes a gentle peppery lift and Cabernet Franc adds aromatic detail. The texture is polished, with balanced acidity supporting the wine’s depth.
Finish:
Long and structured, finishing with lingering black fruit, savoury spice and fine, drying tannins.

Quoin Rock Black Series Red Blend 2017
- Food Pairing : The structure and depth of the Quoin Rock Black Series Red Blend 2017 make it well suited to richer, savoury dishes. It pairs particularly well with grilled Karoo lamb chops, where the wine’s firm tannins complement the meat’s natural richness. A slow-braised beef short rib or oxtail stew also works beautifully, as the wine’s dark fruit and spice echo the depth of the dish. For a more casual pairing, try it with a chargrilled ribeye steak or mushroom-and-thyme risotto, where the wine’s acidity and structure help balance the richness of the food while enhancing its savoury flavours.
