North British 1993 Single Grain Whisky
Whisky : Scottish
Description
The North British Distillery has been distilling grain whisky in Edinburgh since 1885 and is now jointly owned by Diageo and the Edrington Group. It is one of Scotland’s few dedicated grain whisky producers, historically supplying spirit for major blended Scotch labels while leaving a relatively small but growing catalogue of official and independent single grain bottlings. Grain whisky from North British tends to be lighter in body but richly nuanced with the long-term influence of quality cask maturation, which makes older cask-strength releases like the 1993 vintage particularly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts.
Colour: Deep amber with warm, coppery tones - a hallmark of extended cask age.
Nose: Elegant and inviting, with sweet vanilla, butterscotch and honeyed notes giving way to dried orchard fruits, gentle spice and soft oak complexity. Depending on bottling, a hint of resinous wood and cocoa can emerge with air.
Palate: Smooth and rounded, this whisky delivers an interplay of caramel, toffee and dried fruit richness supported by gentle grain character. The influence of long maturation brings balanced spice and nuanced depth without overwhelming the inherent sweetness.
Finish: A medium-long finish that echoes notes of sweet barley, dark honey and a touch of oak spice, leaving a warm, satisfying impression.

North British 1993 Single Grain Whisky
- Food Pairing : This mature Scottish grain whisky’s gentle sweetness, balanced oak influence and nuanced spice make it a fine contemplative dram on its own - ideally served neat or with a few drops of water to open the aromatics. If you’re pairing it with food, consider lightly cured smoked salmon or aged cheeses like Comté or Gruyère that complement its depth without overpowering its subtle grain character. For richer fare, a citrus-zest-enhanced dessert (like lemon tart) can highlight the whisky’s sweeter orchard fruit notes.
- Drink before: Drink now, as it is likely bottled around the 25-30 year mark, offering a matured, refined flavour.
- Manufacturer: Sonas
- Region: Lowlands, Scotland
