Description
Lomond lies near Gansbaai in the Agulhas region, not far from where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet. This is one of South Africa’s coolest winegrowing areas, with strong maritime influence, misty mornings and steady breezes that slow ripening and help grapes keep their natural acidity. The vineyards are planted on a mix of shale and sandy soils, giving good drainage and naturally low yields. Lomond’s approach to Merlot is to harness this cool climate for a style that is ripe but not heavy: careful vineyard work, selective picking and gentle extraction in the cellar, followed by measured oak maturation to polish tannins and add subtle spice. The result is a Merlot that feels fresh and detailed, shaped as much by coastal conditions as by the variety itself.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a bright, youthful rim and moderate intensity.
Nose:
Aromas of ripe plum and red cherry lead, supported by blackberry, a hint of cassis, dried herbs, graphite and gentle notes of cedar and baking spice from time in oak.
Palate:
Medium bodied with smooth, fine tannins and a lively line of acidity that reflects the cool, coastal origin. The core flavours are juicy plum, red berries and a touch of blackcurrant, layered with subtle leafiness and savoury spice. The texture is supple rather than weighty, giving an elegant, easy-drinking feel while still offering enough structure for food.
Finish:
Medium in length, with lingering red fruit, soft oak spice and a faintly savoury, herbal note.
