L'Avenir Single Block Pinotage 2021
Pinotage
Description
Situated on the slopes of the Simonsberg in Stellenbosch, L'Avenir Estate has built its reputation around one grape in particular: Pinotage, South Africa’s signature varietal. The estate’s name means “the future” in French, reflecting a philosophy that respects the Cape’s winemaking heritage while refining it through modern viticulture and careful cellar work.
The vineyards lie on decomposed granite soils with good natural drainage, helping to control vine vigour and concentrate flavour in the fruit. Warm days and cooling afternoon breezes typical of the Simonsberg ward allow Pinotage to ripen fully while retaining freshness.
The L'Avenir Single Block Pinotage 2021 comes from a carefully selected parcel of vines planted specifically for concentration and character. Grapes are hand-harvested and vinified with a focus on expressing site and variety. The wine is matured in French oak barrels, adding structure and subtle spice without overshadowing the fruit-driven personality that defines Stellenbosch Pinotage.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a youthful purple rim, showing concentration in the glass.
Nose:
Ripe black cherry and plum lead the aromatics, followed by notes of mulberry, dark chocolate and gentle oak spice. With air, hints of roasted coffee bean and fynbos emerge.
Palate:
The palate is medium- to full-bodied with plush dark berry fruit at its core. Fine tannins provide structure without heaviness, while flavours of blackberry, cocoa and a touch of smoky spice add depth. The wine remains fresh and focused, with well-integrated oak supporting the fruit.
Finish:
Lingering and smooth, with dark fruit and subtle spice fading slowly alongside soft tannins.

- Food Pairing : The richness and structure of L'Avenir Single Block Pinotage 2021 make it a natural partner for flavourful, hearty dishes. It works particularly well with a slow-braised Karoo lamb shank, where the wine’s dark fruit and spice complement the savoury depth of the meat. Grilled boerewors with onion relish also pairs well, as the wine’s tannins cut through the richness while its fruit lifts the smoky flavours. For something more rustic, try it with a mushroom and rosemary potjie, where the earthy character of the dish echoes the wine’s savoury undertones. Even a chargrilled steak with pepper sauce will find a comfortable match with the wine’s weight and ripe tannin structure.
