Kanonkop Pinotage 2022
Pinotage
Description
Located on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in Stellenbosch, Kanonkop Wine Estate is widely regarded as one of South Africa’s most respected producers of Pinotage. The estate’s history dates back to the 17th century, and its name - meaning “cannon hill” - refers to the signal cannon once fired from the hilltop to announce the arrival of ships in Table Bay.
Kanonkop’s vineyards benefit from decomposed granite soils and cooling breezes from False Bay, conditions that encourage slow, even ripening. The estate has built an international reputation for producing Pinotage that balances power with refinement.
The Kanonkop Pinotage 2022 is crafted using traditional methods that reflect the estate’s commitment to authenticity. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in open concrete fermenters, with regular punch-downs to extract colour and structure. The wine is then matured for around 16 months in French oak barrels, allowing the fruit and tannins to integrate while adding subtle complexity.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a dark purple core, showing the concentration typical of Stellenbosch Pinotage.
Nose:
Aromatic layers of black cherry, ripe plum and mulberry lead the bouquet, followed by hints of violet, mocha and gentle oak spice.
Palate:
Full-bodied and structured with rich dark fruit flavours. The tannins are firm yet polished, supporting notes of blackberry, dark chocolate and subtle savoury spice.
Finish:
Long and persistent with lingering dark fruit, cocoa and a touch of smoky oak.

- Food Pairing : The depth and structure of Kanonkop Pinotage 2022 make it a natural partner for robust dishes. It pairs particularly well with grilled steak or a traditional South African braai, where the wine’s bold fruit and tannins stand up to smoky, charred flavours. Slow-roasted lamb or lamb shank also works beautifully, as the richness of the dish complements the wine’s dark fruit and spice. For a more casual pairing, try it with barbecue ribs or a hearty beef burger - the wine’s structure and savoury notes bring balance to richer, flavourful food.
