Holden Manz Avant Garde Collection Chardonnay 2022
Perched in the heart of the Franschhoek Valley, Holden Manz Wine Estate is a boutique producer where terroir drives style. The estate sources fruit from cool-climate sites - from high-altitude slopes on the Banhoek side of Simonsberg to cooler valley blocks - capturing bright acidity and refined fruit purity that Chardonnay thrives on in this corner of the Western Cape. Vineyard practices prioritise early-morning hand-harvests and careful site selection, while cellar philosophy leans into barrel fermentation with indigenous yeasts and extended lees contact to build texture and complexity without losing freshness. The result is a wine that speaks to both the cool Franschhoek climate and the estate’s thoughtful, site-driven approach.
Colour: Pale straw with subtle golden hues indicating gentle oak influence.
Nose: Bright citrus zest - think lime and pink grapefruit - layered with honeyed stone fruit and delicate roasted almond nuances. A hint of lemon meringue and white blossoms adds depth without overwhelming.
Palate: Elegantly textured with creamy lees-derived richness from extended contact. Ripe melon and orchard fruit sit alongside a pronounced mineral thread and a touch of saline complexity, supported by crisp acidity that gives the wine shape.
Finish: The finish is poised and lingering, with refreshing acidity lifting the honeyed fruit and subtle mineral notes right through to the last sip.
- Food Pairing : The Holden Manz Avant Garde Collection Chardonnay 2022 partners beautifully with dishes that echo its balance of fruit richness and refreshing acidity. Try it with pan-fried scallops served with minted garden peas and new potatoes, where the wine’s citrus and mineral notes frame the sweetness of the shellfish. A grilled lemon-and-herb chicken or creamy fish curry will resonate with that creamy lees texture, while a simple goat’s cheese tart contrasts fresh acidity with savoury richness. The wine’s structure makes it versatile with both lighter and more flavourful mains.
