Hasher Batrachella Pinotage 2023
Pinotage
Description
Hasher Family Wines is a modern, family-operated estate in the cool maritime Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley near Hermanus. This distinct terroir, with ocean breezes and gravelly soils, favours elegant red varieties, allowing grapes to ripen slowly with balanced acidity. The Batrachella Pinotage 2023 is crafted to reflect this site specificity: grapes were hand-picked, gently fermented (with a mix of wild and selected yeasts), and matured for 11 months in French oak, including a small percentage of new wood, to build texture while keeping fruit character front and centre. The estate’s approach is thoughtful rather than flashy - letting Pinotage’s fruit purity and structural potential lead, with restraint rather than force.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a clear core and youthful hue.
Nose:
A mix of lush dark berries - blueberry, blackberry and wild strawberry - opens up first, layered with intriguing savoury threads: cacao nibs, black tea and whispers of local fynbos florals.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied with lively acidity and silky tannins. The dark fruit profile is complemented by subtle spicy complexity and a gentle hint of earth and spice from oak maturation. Texture feels refined rather than heavy, with a poised, linear drive.
Finish:
Long, focused and succulent, with a lingering savoury-berry blend and a touch of gentle pepper spice that balances the fruit’s richness.

Hasher Batrachella Pinotage 2023
- Food Pairing : Hasher Batrachella Pinotage 2023 works beautifully with dishes that echo its red-berry fruit and savoury spice. Think succulent rosemary-and-garlic lamb cutlets from the braai, where the wine’s acidity and structure refresh the palate between bites. A rich beef potjie with root vegetables will harmonise with the wine’s earth-spice notes, while grilled venison or slow-roasted duck breast elevate its savoury intensity. For a lighter contrast, braised mushroom risotto with thyme and parmesan offers an umami interplay that mirrors the wine’s fynbos-tinged aromatics.
