Delaire Graff Est. Banghoek Res Merlot 2021 Top 10
Merlot
Description
Perched high on the dramatic Helshoogte Pass between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, Delaire Graff Estate occupies one of the most striking vineyard sites in the Cape Winelands. The Banghoek Valley is known for its elevated vineyards, cool mountain breezes and complex soils, all of which help produce grapes with concentration while retaining freshness.
Under the guidance of winemaker Morné Vrey, Delaire Graff focuses on carefully selected vineyard parcels that best express the estate’s terroir. The Banghoek Reserve Merlot is sourced from one of the estate’s oldest vineyard blocks, planted in 1999. Grapes are hand-harvested in the early morning and sorted meticulously before fermentation.
After fermentation, the wine spends several weeks on the skins to build structure and complexity before maturing for 16 months in French oak barrels (around 70% new). The result is a Merlot that balances richness with clarity of fruit, reflecting both the altitude and the careful cellar approach of the estate.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a dense core and a bright crimson rim, indicating concentration while still showing youthful vibrancy.
Nose:
Aromatic layers of red and black berries lead the bouquet, supported by dark plum, subtle floral notes and a savoury hint of olive. As it opens, gentle spice and oak nuances emerge, adding complexity without dominating the fruit.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied with a supple, polished texture. Ripe plum and berry fruit sit at the centre, supported by fine tannins and fresh acidity that keep the wine focused and balanced. The oak contributes discreet notes of spice and cocoa, complementing rather than overpowering the fruit.
Finish:
Long and composed, finishing with lingering dark fruit, subtle spice and a dry, structured edge.

- Food Pairing : The supple texture and structured fruit of Delaire Graff Estate Banghoek Reserve Merlot 2021 make it a versatile partner for hearty but refined dishes. It works particularly well with roast lamb, where the wine’s ripe fruit and gentle spice complement the richness of the meat. A grilled beef fillet or ribeye also pairs beautifully, as the wine’s tannins provide structure without overwhelming the dish. For something slower cooked, try it with braised short ribs or oxtail - the wine’s depth and savoury notes mirror the intensity of the sauce while its acidity keeps the pairing fresh and balanced.
