Situated on the slopes of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch, DeMorgenzon is known for crafting wines that combine Old World structure with the generous fruit character of the Cape. The estate sits between 200 and 400 metres above sea level, where cooling sea breezes and decomposed granite soils create an ideal environment for Rhône varieties such as Syrah.
DeMorgenzon’s vineyards are planted across carefully selected hillside blocks, allowing grapes to ripen slowly while retaining freshness and aromatic detail. The estate has become well known for its distinctive approach to vineyard life - classical music is played through speakers in the vineyards, reflecting a philosophy that farming should be attentive and harmonious.
For the DeMorgenzon Reserve Syrah 2019, grapes are hand-harvested and fermented with careful extraction to emphasise perfume and texture rather than sheer power. Maturation takes place in French oak barrels, allowing the wine to develop depth and savoury complexity while preserving the purity of Stellenbosch fruit.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a dark garnet core and a vibrant rim, indicating both concentration and youthful energy.
Nose:
Blackberry, plum and black cherry lead the aromatics, followed by cracked black pepper, violet and subtle hints of smoked meat. As the wine opens, notes of olive tapenade, liquorice and warm spice emerge from the oak maturation.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied with a smooth but structured texture. Dark berry fruit sits at the centre, supported by fine tannins and bright acidity. Savoury elements of pepper, dried herbs and graphite add complexity, while restrained oak contributes gentle spice and depth.
Finish:
Long and layered, finishing with black fruit, peppery spice and a lingering savoury note typical of well-made Stellenbosch Syrah.
