COGH Riebeeksrivier Southern Slopes 2020
Blend : Red
Description
Cape of Good Hope wines are made by Anthonij Rupert Wyne from carefully selected heritage vineyards across the Cape, and Riebeeksrivier is one of their Swartland jewels. The farm lies on the southern slopes of the Kasteelberg near Riebeek-Kasteel, where decomposed granite and shale soils, elevation and steady afternoon breezes give naturally small berries and good ripeness without losing freshness. The Southern Slopes red is shaped in a modern Rhône style: Mediterranean varieties grown in a warm, dry area, picked for balance rather than sheer power, then matured in oak to polish tannins rather than dominate the fruit. The result is a wine that captures Swartland generosity while still feeling measured and food friendly.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a bright, youthful rim and good colour concentration in the glass.
Nose:
Aromas of dark cherries, ripe plums and blackberries lead, layered with notes of black pepper, dried herbs, lavender, fynbos and a gentle touch of oak spice and cocoa.
Palate:
Medium to full bodied with juicy dark fruit at the core – think black cherry, plum and a touch of mulberry – supported by fresh acidity and fine, lightly grippy tannins. Subtle pepper, savoury herb and smoked meat notes add complexity without feeling heavy, giving a supple but structured mouthfeel.
Finish:
Medium-long, with lingering dark fruit, pepper spice and a savoury, slightly earthy edge that invites another sip.

COGH Riebeeksrivier Southern Slopes 2020
- Food Pairing : COGH Riebeeksrivier Southern Slopes 2020 is a natural partner for flavourful, medium-rich dishes. Its ripe fruit and gentle spice work beautifully with rosemary-and-garlic lamb chops on the braai or slow-cooked Karoo lamb shanks, where the tannins stand up to the richness. It’s equally at home with a smoky boerewors roll with caramelised onions, or a tomato-based pasta with beef mince and herbs, where the wine’s acidity cuts through the sauce. For a meat-free option, try grilled aubergine, mushroom and halloumi skewers or a roasted vegetable and olive tart – the Mediterranean flavours echo the Rhône-style blend and bring out its savoury side.
