Beyerskloof has become one of the defining names in South African Pinotage, with founder Beyers Truter widely recognised for his role in championing the varietal both locally and internationally. Situated in Stellenbosch, the estate focuses almost exclusively on red wine production, with Pinotage forming the heart of its identity and winemaking philosophy.
The Beyerskloof Diesel Pinotage 2021 is named after Beyers Truter’s beloved Great Dane, Diesel, who appears on the label. Produced only from selected barrels and older bush vine vineyards rooted in Oakleaf and Hutton soils, the wine represents a more structured and cellar-worthy expression of Pinotage. Fermentation took place in open fermenters with regular punch-downs before the wine matured for 20 months in new French oak barrels, adding depth and complexity while retaining varietal character.
Colour:
Deep, intense ruby red with a dark garnet core.
Nose:
Blackberry, plum and cassis aromas lead the nose, followed by cedar oak, dark chocolate and subtle smoky spice. There are also hints of liquorice and roasted coffee beans developing with time in the glass.
Palate:
Full-bodied and concentrated, with dense dark fruit supported by firm but polished tannins. The wine carries richness and power without losing freshness, while flavours of black cherry, cocoa, cedar and savoury spice add complexity through the palate. Oak integration is prominent but balanced by the fruit intensity.
Finish:
Long and structured, with lingering dark berries, chocolate, cedar and fine spice notes on the finish.
