Blaauwklippen Zinfandel Brut 2023
Founded in 1682, Blaauwklippen is one of Stellenbosch’s historic wine estates, set among the granite-rich slopes of the Stellenbosch winelands. The estate has an unusual connection with Zinfandel: its original Zinfandel vineyards were planted in 1991 and 2001 on Tukulu and Kroonstad soils, and the variety has become closely associated with Blaauwklippen’s sparkling wine. In fact, the estate describes its Zinfandel Cap Classique as the last of its wines still made from the variety. The Blaauwklippen Zinfandel Brut 2023 is a 100% Zinfandel Cap Classique made using the traditional bottle-fermentation method. The handpicked grapes undergo delicate whole-bunch pressing before a cool fermentation in stainless steel, followed by tirage and a lengthy period of bottle ageing on the lees. The 2023 bottling spent around 30 months on its lees before disgorgement, giving the wine greater texture and brioche complexity while retaining the bright fruit and freshness that make Zinfandel such an intriguing sparkling variety.
Colour: Pale salmon-pink to delicate blush in colour, with a fine, persistent stream of bubbles.
Nose: Fresh nectarine and delicate orange blossom lead, followed by cranberry, strawberry and bright citrus. Extended lees ageing brings subtle brioche and creamy notes beneath the fresh fruit.
Palate: Dry and fresh, with a fine, delicate mousse and flavours of nectarine, cranberry, strawberry and lemon. The palate has a pleasing mineral character and creamy mid-palate texture from its time on the lees, while bright acidity keeps the wine energetic and focused. At just 2.70 g/L residual sugar, the Brut style remains crisp rather than noticeably sweet.
Finish: Fresh and persistent, with juicy cranberry and citrus flavours alongside a subtle brioche creaminess and clean mineral freshness.
- Food Pairing : The Blaauwklippen Zinfandel Brut 2023 is particularly versatile at the table thanks to its bright acidity, fine mousse and dry, fruit-driven character. Try it with oysters, prawns, sushi, grilled linefish or smoked salmon, where the bubbles and citrus freshness lift delicate seafood flavours. It is equally enjoyable with a platter of fresh cheeses and charcuterie, while its gentle red-fruit character makes it an especially good partner for lightly spiced Asian dishes. Blaauwklippen itself recommends the Cap Classique with seafood and as a celebratory aperitif.
