Flagstone The Surge Sauvignon Blanc 2023
Sauvignon Blanc
Description
Flagstone Wines, based in Somerset West, has built a reputation for expressive, character-driven wines that balance innovation with a strong sense of place. Since its establishment in the late 1990s, the winery has focused on sourcing fruit from distinctive vineyard sites across the Cape, allowing each wine to reflect regional character rather than a single estate style.
The Surge Sauvignon Blanc 2023 draws fruit primarily from the Darling region, where strong Atlantic Ocean influences moderate temperatures and extend the ripening season. The cool afternoon sea breezes help preserve acidity and aromatic intensity, giving the wine its hallmark freshness and layered flavour profile.
Unlike lighter, sharply herbaceous Sauvignon Blanc styles, The Surge aims for greater texture and complexity while retaining vibrancy. Careful lees contact and measured winemaking allow the fruit expression to remain clear and focused, resulting in a Sauvignon Blanc with both freshness and palate weight.
Colour:
Pale straw with a light green tint and brilliant clarity.
Nose:
Aromatic layers of asparagus, green fig, lime and passion fruit lead the nose, followed by hints of guava and fresh-cut herbs.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with vibrant acidity and a fuller mouthfeel than many traditional Sauvignon Blancs. Citrus and tropical fruit flavours carry through clearly, supported by a rounded texture that adds depth without losing freshness. The coastal influence keeps the wine focused and energetic throughout.
Finish:
Long, crisp and persistent, with lingering citrus zest, green fig and subtle tropical fruit notes.

- Food Pairing : Flagstone The Surge Sauvignon Blanc 2023 pairs especially well with dishes that balance freshness and richness. Grilled calamari, West Coast mussels, sushi or line fish with lemon butter all complement the wine’s vibrant acidity and citrus-driven profile beautifully. Its fuller texture also makes it a good match for creamy goats’ cheese salads, asparagus dishes or herb risotto, where the wine’s green fig and tropical notes can mirror and lift the flavours on the plate.
