Cape of Good Hope Riebeeksrivier Syrah 2021
The Cape of Good Hope range forms part of the Anthonij Rupert Wyne portfolio and focuses on wines that express specific vineyard sites across the Western Cape. The Riebeeksrivier Syrah comes from a distinctive pocket of the Swartland, where old dryland vineyards grow in rugged conditions at the foot of the Kasteelberg mountain.
This part of the Riebeeksrivier ward is known for its shale and decomposed granite soils, which encourage deep root systems and naturally low yields. Combined with warm days and cooling afternoon breezes, the conditions favour Syrah that balances ripeness with savoury complexity and freshness.
For the Cape of Good Hope Riebeeksrivier Syrah 2021, grapes were hand-harvested from selected parcels and fermented with a portion of whole bunches to build aromatic lift and structure. The wine matured in French oak barrels, mainly older barrels, allowing the vineyard character to remain the central focus while adding gentle spice and texture.
Â
Colour:
Deep ruby with a dark, inky core and a youthful purple edge.
Â
Nose:
Aromatic and layered, opening with blackberry, plum and black cherry, followed by classic Syrah notes of cracked black pepper, fynbos and smoked meat. Subtle hints of violet and spice develop with air.
Â
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied with concentrated dark fruit balanced by lively acidity. Flavours of blackcurrant, plum and mulberry sit alongside savoury pepper and herbal nuances. The tannins are firm but polished, giving the wine structure without heaviness.
Â
Finish:
Long and savoury, with lingering notes of black fruit, pepper spice and a subtle mineral edge typical of Swartland Syrah.
- Food Pairing : The savoury spice and structure of Cape of Good Hope Riebeeksrivier Syrah 2021 make it a natural companion for robust dishes. It pairs beautifully with slow-braised lamb shank or Karoo lamb chops, where the wineâs peppery notes echo the richness of the meat. Grilled venison or beef steak also work well, as the firm tannins complement the texture of the dish. For something slightly lighter, try it with roasted aubergine, mushrooms or Mediterranean vegetable dishes, where the earthy flavours highlight the Syrahâs savoury complexity.
