Rietvallei Wine Estate is one of the Robertson Wine Valley's historic family-owned estates, having been in the Burger family since 1864. Today, the estate remains under family ownership, with generations of experience informing both its viticulture and winemaking. Rietvallei's approach combines an intimate understanding of its soils with modern cellar practices, allowing its wines to reflect the distinctive character of the Robertson region. The John B Chenin Blanc is named in honour of Johannes Marthinus Burger, or Johnny Burger, whose initials also feature in the estate's JMB wines. The Chenin Blanc vineyards were planted in 2015 and are rooted in deep, lime-rich red Karoo soils. For the most recently documented vintage, the grapes were harvested at 22.5°B and only free-run juice was selected. Fermentation took place in second- and third-fill 300-litre French oak barrels, followed by three months on the fine lees.
Colour: Bright, pale straw with a youthful golden hue.
Nose: Fresh tropical fruit leads the aromatics, with notes of ripe melon, pineapple and subtle guava alongside fresh citrus. A gentle hint of oak spice adds depth.
Palate: Dry and generously textured, with ripe tropical fruit and citrus flavours carried by a creamy, rounded mouthfeel. Fresh acidity provides lift and keeps the wine focused, while subtle oak adds warmth and complexity without dominating the fruit.
Finish: Smooth and lingering, with ripe fruit, fresh citrus and a gentle touch of oak spice.
