Ridgeback Wines is situated in Paarl in the Western Cape, where warm, dry conditions are moderated by the surrounding mountain ranges. The Ridgeback Chenin Blanc is crafted to make the most of Paarl's generous growing conditions, producing a richly flavoured white with ripe fruit balanced by refreshing acidity. The 2021 release contains a small 3% addition of Viognier, bringing extra floral fragrance and texture to the predominantly Chenin Blanc blend. For the 2021 vintage, the grapes were destemmed without crushing, preserving whole berries during pressing. The juice was settled before being gravity-fed into 400-litre French oak barrels. Fermentation began naturally before selected yeast was introduced to ensure the wine fermented dry. The wine then spent eight months in French oak, including 20% new barrels, with regular bâtonnage to build a fuller, creamier texture.
Colour: Bright straw yellow with a youthful golden hue.
Nose: Ripe pineapple and sweet orange blossom lead the aromatic profile, followed by white peach, ripe pear and hints of citrus. The small proportion of Viognier adds a gentle floral lift.
Palate: Rich and rounded, with generous tropical fruit and peach flavours balanced by fresh acidity. Pineapple and ripe citrus are joined by lemon zest and white peach, while time in French oak and on the lees gives the wine a smooth, textured feel without overwhelming the fruit.
Finish: Fresh and lingering, with lemon zest, white peach and ripe tropical fruit leaving a clean, juicy impression.
