Mullineux Kloof Street Chenin Blanc 2025
Mullineux Family Wines was founded by husband-and-wife winemakers Chris and Andrea Mullineux, who made their first Swartland wines in 2008. Their approach is firmly rooted in the vineyards, with an emphasis on old vines, sustainable farming and allowing the character of the Swartland's varied soils to come through rather than imposing a heavy winemaking style. Mullineux has since become one of South Africa's most respected producers. Mullineux Kloof Street Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2025 brings together fruit from three sustainably farmed vineyard parcels across the Swartland. One parcel consists of approximately 40-year-old Chenin Blanc vines planted in stony shale and schist soils on Kasteelberg, while the other two are old, dry-farmed bush vines growing in decomposed granite on the Paardeberg. The combination gives the wine both mineral character and the generous fruit concentration associated with mature Chenin Blanc vines. The wine is made by Chris and Andrea Mullineux. The 2025 vintage is whole-bunch pressed and fermented using natural yeasts, with the blend combining tank-fermented fruit with a small proportion matured in older French oak. This restrained use of oak is primarily about texture and support rather than obvious oak flavour.
Colour: Bright straw yellow with a youthful, clear appearance.
Nose: Ripe pear and fresh orchard fruit lead the nose, followed by subtle citrus and wet-stone aromas. There is a gentle mineral character underneath the fruit, giving the wine freshness and definition.
Palate: Dry and medium-bodied, with ripe pear and citrus flavours supported by vibrant acidity. The texture is supple and rounded, with a gently pithy character adding grip and interest. The combination of old-vine fruit, fresh acidity and mineral character gives the wine depth without making it feel heavy.
Finish: Clean and refreshing, with lingering citrus and orchard fruit followed by a subtle saline, mineral edge.
- Food Pairing : The fresh acidity, supple texture and subtle mineral character of Mullineux Kloof Street Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2025 make it particularly versatile with grilled line fish, prawns, roast chicken, creamy seafood pasta and goat's cheese. Its ripe pear and citrus fruit complement lightly spiced Cape Malay dishes, while the lively acidity and saline finish help cut through richer sauces and creamy textures. The wine also has enough texture to work with roast pork or a simple chicken and herb dish.
- Drink before: Cellaring potential: Enjoy now or over the next 4â5 years, with the freshness and structure to develop additional texture and complexity.
