Ernst Gouws & Co is a family-owned producer based in Stellenbosch, working closely with a network of growers rather than a single estate. The focus is on vineyards rooted in classic Stellenbosch soils – mainly decomposed granite and shale – which suit Chenin Blanc particularly well, giving natural acidity and quietly expressive fruit. The cellar approach is straightforward and modern: cool fermentations in stainless steel, clean handling of the juice and, in many vintages, a period on fine lees to build a little extra texture without adding obvious oak flavour. Ernst Gouws & Co Chenin Blanc 2025 is made to be clear, dry and food-friendly – a Cape Chenin that shows ripe fruit and generosity without heaviness or sweetness.
Colour:
Pale to medium straw with a light golden hint, bright and youthful in the glass.
Nose:
Ripe pear and yellow apple lead, supported by white peach and soft citrus. Subtle notes of quince, honeysuckle and a light waxy or leesy edge add a touch of complexity while keeping the profile fresh and inviting.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with a smooth, rounded texture and lively but not sharp acidity. Flavours of pear, baked apple and stone fruit are lifted by lemon and a hint of grapefruit pith. The mid-palate has enough weight to feel satisfying at the table, yet the wine remains dry and refreshing, avoiding any sticky or overly sweet impression. Overall it feels honest, balanced and very easy to drink.
Finish:
Medium in length with lingering pear, gentle citrus and a faint, savoury nutty note.
