Donkiesbaai Steen 2025
Donkiesbaai forms part of the Jean Engelbrecht portfolio, with winemaking led by Duran Cornhill. Inspired by a long-standing family connection to the West Coast, the range focuses on wines that reflect place and food culture, while sourcing fruit from regions best suited to each varietal.
For the Steen 2025, grapes come from certified old bush vines in Piekenierskloof, many over 35 years old. These high-altitude vineyards, rooted in sandy soils, produce naturally low yields and concentrated fruit. Warm days ensure ripeness, while cool evenings preserve acidity and aromatic lift.
Winemaking is layered rather than heavy-handed, with multiple pick dates to build complexity. A combination of older oak, concrete, and lees ageing adds texture without overshadowing the fruit. The result is a Chenin Blanc that balances richness with precision - a hallmark of modern South African Steen.
Colour:
Bright straw with a pale golden tint, indicating both freshness and gentle texture.
Nose:
Ripe orchard fruit leads - yellow apple, pineapple and quince - followed by citrus zest, chamomile and subtle hints of vanilla and spice.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with a rounded, lightly creamy texture balanced by vibrant acidity. Layers of pineapple, dried apple and lemon curd unfold, supported by a gentle savoury edge and a touch of oak-derived spice.
Finish:
Long and dry, with lingering citrus, stone fruit and a faint almond-like note adding complexity.
- Food Pairing : Donkiesbaai Steen 2025 is a versatile food wine, thanks to its balance of texture and acidity. It pairs well with grilled prawns or crayfish, where the freshness lifts the richness, while roast chicken with herbs complements its subtle oak and savoury notes. Creamy dishes like risotto or pasta work well with the wine’s rounded palate, and firmer fish such as kabeljou or kingklip echo its weight without overpowering its detail.
