Darling Cellars Old Bush Vines Chenin Blanc 2025
Darling Cellars is based in the Darling wine region of the Western Cape, where cooling Atlantic influences and dry growing conditions help preserve freshness while allowing grapes to develop generous fruit character. The region is particularly well suited to Chenin Blanc, South Africa's signature white grape variety. The Old Bush Vines range celebrates carefully selected older vineyards, with the vines' age, growing conditions and soils contributing to the character of the finished wine. Earlier releases of Darling Cellars Old Bush Vines Chenin Blanc have come from unirrigated bush vines, including vineyards planted in deep Hutton soils with koffieklip and well-drained, weathered granite. These naturally lower-yielding vineyards can produce concentrated fruit with depth and individuality.
Colour: Medium-light straw yellow with a subtle green tinge, giving the wine a bright, youthful appearance.
Nose: Ripe yellow peach and white pear lead, followed by tropical pineapple and delicate orange peel. Hints of vanilla blossom and toasted notes add complexity, reflecting the richer, oak-influenced style associated with earlier vintages of this wine.
Palate: Medium-bodied, with generous peach, pear and tropical fruit flavours supported by refreshing acidity. A rounded texture adds weight, while subtle toast and creamy oak notes bring depth without overwhelming the fruit. The combination of concentration and freshness gives the wine a composed, food-friendly character.
Finish: Persistent and gently savoury, with lingering stone fruit, citrus peel and a delicate toasted note.
- Food Pairing : Darling Cellars Old Bush Vines Chenin Blanc 2025 should pair beautifully with Cape Malay chicken curry, where the wine's ripe fruit complements warming spices while its acidity refreshes the palate. Creamy seafood risotto is another excellent match, with the wine's texture complementing the richness of the dish. Grilled line fish with lemon butter brings out the citrus and stone-fruit character, while roast pork with apple sauce offers a pleasing combination of savoury richness and fruit. For a vegetarian option, try a butternut and sage risotto, where the sweetness of the squash complements the wine's ripe fruit and gentle oak notes.
