COGH Van Lill OV Chenin Blanc 2023 (Top 10)
Under the Cape of Good Hope banner, the Van Lill & Visser Chenin Blanc reflects deep vineyard heritage and terroir focus. The fruit comes from old, unirrigated vines planted decades ago on the sandy red soils of the Skurfberg and Citrusdal Mountain - sites renowned for natural acidity and concentrated flavours thanks to cool nights from the nearby Atlantic Ocean. Basie van Lill and the Van Lill family have tended these vineyards for decades, with Christiaan continuing that legacy, prioritising thoughtful vineyard work and capturing site expression rather than over-manipulation in the cellar.
Winemaking combines gentle handling with both stainless steel and some older oak - allowing authentic fruit presence to shine through while adding texture and depth without dominance. The result is an elegant yet expressive South African Chenin Blanc that honours place, vine age and tradition.
Colour:
Pale straw with a touch of green, youthful and bright.
Nose:
A lifted aromatic profile of nectarine, fresh peach, melon and subtle citrus zest, with a clean flint-like nuance that hints at mineral drive.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with crisp acidity, vibrant stone fruit flavours of apricot and peach combine with citrus undertones and a sleek texture. A balanced interplay of fruit intensity and spine keeps the wine fresh and lively.
Finish:
Long and refreshing with a clean echo of citrus and orchard fruit, leaving a poised and zesty aftertaste.
- Food Pairing : Cape of Good Hope Van Lill & Visser Chenin Blanc 2023’s vibrant acidity and fruit-driven profile make it ideal with seafood and lighter dishes. Pair it with grilled calamari dressed in lemon and parsley, where the citrus and stone fruit interplay enhances the saline freshness. It also suits Thai-style chicken salad with lime and herbs - the wine’s crispness will balance gentle spice and herbaceous flavours. For a richer match, try butternut and goat’s cheese tart; the acidity cuts through creaminess while echoing fruit notes on the palate.
- Drink before: Cellaring potential of 3–5 years. This Chenin Blanc shows fresh acidity and structure that reward moderate cellaring but remains excellent young.
