Set high on the mountain slopes above Franschhoek, Chamonix Estate is known for producing wines shaped by altitude, cool air movement and diverse mountain soils. While the estate has long been associated with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, its Old Vine Steen has quietly become one of its most characterful wines.

The Chamonix Old Vine Steen 2023 comes from a dryland-farmed Chenin Blanc vineyard planted in 1965, making it one of the estate’s oldest blocks. Situated around 320 metres above sea level in sandstone-derived soils, the vineyard naturally produces low yields with concentration and texture. Winemaker Neil Bruwer follows a restrained approach in the cellar, using natural fermentation and maturation across older French oak, clay amphora and ceramic egg to preserve freshness and vineyard expression rather than overt oak influence. The result is a Chenin Blanc that feels layered, mineral and distinctly rooted in Franschhoek terroir.

Colour:
Bright straw gold with pale green reflections and a clear, luminous appearance.

Nose:
Aromatic layers of yellow apple, ripe pear and white peach lead into notes of citrus peel, honeycomb and dried herbs. Subtle flinty minerality and hints of ginger and wet stone add complexity and freshness.

Palate:
Textured and concentrated without heaviness, showing flavours of orchard fruit, preserved lemon and soft stone fruit. The old vines bring depth and palate weight, while lively acidity and mineral tension keep the wine focused and energetic. Gentle oak influence adds breadth rather than sweetness.

Finish:
Long and savoury, finishing with lingering citrus oil, pear skin and a chalky mineral edge.

  • Food Pairing : Chamonix Old Vine Steen 2023 pairs particularly well with dishes that balance richness and freshness. Roast chicken with lemon and thyme works beautifully with the wine’s textured palate and bright acidity, while Cape Malay-style pickled fish or grilled line fish complement its mineral character and citrus lift. Creamy mushroom risotto or pork belly with apple also suit the wine’s layered texture and savoury depth, allowing the freshness to cut through richer flavours without overwhelming the food.
