Alvi's Drift 221 Chenin Blanc 2024 (Top 10)
Alvi’s Drift, located in the Breede River Valley near Worcester, is a family-owned estate with deep roots dating back to 1928. Today, under the stewardship of Dr. Alvi van der Merwe, the farm balances generational knowledge with a modern, quality-focused approach.
The Worcester region is warm and dry, shaped by surrounding mountains that create a rain shadow effect. Irrigation from the Breede River allows for consistent ripening, while carefully selected vineyard sites and sustainable farming practices help preserve balance and freshness.
The 221 range, named after the Springbok jersey number worn by the founder, represents a step up in focus and detail. This Chenin Blanc is crafted using free-run juice, with a portion fermented in French oak and acacia barrels and the rest in stainless steel - a combination that builds texture without losing the variety’s natural vibrancy.
Colour:
Pale straw with a bright, polished clarity.
Nose:
Ripe tropical fruit and stone fruit lead - think nectarine, peach and hints of pineapple - layered with subtle vanilla and a light floral note.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with a gently creamy texture. The fruit profile leans toward ripe citrus and yellow fruit, supported by fresh acidity that keeps everything lifted. A touch of oak adds roundness rather than weight.
Finish:
Lingering and composed, with citrus brightness and a soft, textured close.
- Food Pairing : Alvi’s Drift 221 Chenin Blanc 2024 is a versatile partner at the table, thanks to its balance of fruit and acidity. It works particularly well with grilled fish or calamari, where the freshness cuts through richness, while roast chicken or pork benefits from the wine’s gentle texture and subtle oak influence. For something local, try it with snoek pâté or a creamy chicken dish - the wine’s structure supports both lighter and slightly richer flavours without overwhelming them.
