Great Heart Stellenbosch Chardonnay 2023
Great Heart Wines is a unique South African project - a worker-owned brand created by the team behind Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines. Based in Stellenbosch, the wines are crafted with a strong sense of site and social purpose, combining skilled winemaking with a meaningful empowerment model.
The Stellenbosch Chardonnay 2023 is sourced from a single vineyard on the cooler, south-facing slopes of the Polkadraai Hills, where decomposed granite soils and maritime influence from False Bay help preserve acidity and finesse.
Winemaking follows a minimal intervention approach: whole-bunch pressing, natural fermentation in French oak (with a portion new), and maturation on lees for added texture. The result is a wine that balances precision with subtle richness - driven more by site than by cellar technique.
Colour:
Pale straw with a bright, lightly golden edge.
Nose:
Lemon rind, green apple and white peach lead, followed by notes of melba toast, fynbos and a distinct wet-stone minerality.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with a fine, textured mouthfeel. Citrus and stone fruit sit alongside subtle oak influence, adding hints of brioche and toasted nuts. The acidity is precise and linear, giving the wine energy and structure.
Finish:
Long and clean, with lingering citrus oil, light savoury notes and a mineral edge that keeps the wine focused.
- Food Pairing : Great Heart Stellenbosch Chardonnay 2023 works best with dishes that echo its balance of freshness and texture. It pairs well with roast chicken, grilled line fish or prawns with lemon butter, where the acidity lifts richness without overwhelming the dish. Creamy pasta or mushroom risotto also complement the wine’s lees-driven texture, while its mineral edge makes it a good match for simple, well-seasoned seafood or even sushi.
