Glenelly Unoaked Chardonnay 2024
Glenelly Estate sits on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg in Stellenbosch, where a mix of decomposed granite and quartz-rich soils contributes to both structure and a distinct mineral edge in the wines. The estate was revitalised in 2003 by May-Eliane de Lencquesaing, formerly of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande in Bordeaux, bringing an Old World sensibility to South African terroir.
The Glenelly Unoaked Chardonnay 2024 reflects a deliberate stylistic choice: purity over embellishment. Grapes are gently pressed and fermented in stainless steel using natural yeasts, with no malolactic fermentation. This preserves the wine’s natural acidity and keeps the focus on clarity, freshness, and site expression rather than oak influence.
Colour:
Pale straw with a bright green edge, clean and vibrant.
Nose:
Citrus peel, green apple and pear lead, followed by subtle notes of blossom and a flinty, mineral nuance.
Palate:
Medium light in body with a crisp, focused structure. Fresh lemon and grapefruit sit alongside orchard fruit, supported by a fine mineral line. The absence of oak keeps the texture precise, while lees contact adds a gentle roundness.
Finish:
Clean and persistent, with lingering citrus zest and a faint stony character.
- Food Pairing : Glenelly Unoaked Chardonnay 2024 pairs naturally with lighter, fresher dishes where acidity and texture matter. Grilled line fish or hake works particularly well, as the wine’s citrus edge lifts the richness while complementing delicate flavours. It’s equally suited to oysters or sushi, where its clean, mineral profile mirrors the salinity of the dish. For something more substantial, try it with a lemony chicken dish or a creamy pasta - the freshness cuts through richness without overwhelming the plate.
