Benguela Cove Estate Chardonnay 2024
Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate sits on the edge of Walker Bay near Hermanus, where cool maritime conditions and strong ocean breezes create one of South Africa’s most distinctive cool-climate wine regions. The estate’s Chardonnay vineyards are planted on ancient shale soils with high calcium content, helping to produce wines with freshness, texture and a pronounced mineral character.
The 2024 Benguela Cove Estate Chardonnay reflects the estate’s careful balance between modern precision and restrained winemaking. Grapes were hand-harvested and fermented in French oak, with portions of the wine handled differently during fermentation to build complexity and texture. Extended lees ageing and partial malolactic fermentation add richness without overwhelming the wine’s naturally bright fruit profile. The result is a Chardonnay that feels polished and expressive while still clearly rooted in its coastal terroir.
Colour:
Pale straw gold with bright green highlights.
Nose:
Elegant aromas of hazelnut, shortbread biscuit and ripe peach lead the bouquet, followed by yellow apple, citrus peel and subtle toasted oak. Gentle lees-derived notes add depth without dominating the fruit.
Palate:
Textured and creamy on entry, with flavours of stone fruit, pear and citrus layered over a fresh mineral core. The oak is integrated and restrained, adding hints of vanilla and toasted almond rather than heaviness. Bright acidity keeps the wine focused and energetic, giving balance to the richer lees character.
Finish:
Long, clean and fresh, with lingering notes of lemon zest, baked apple and a delicate saline edge.
- Food Pairing : Benguela Cove Estate Chardonnay 2024 pairs comfortably with dishes that balance richness and freshness. Roast chicken with lemon and herbs works particularly well alongside the wine’s citrus and subtle oak character, while creamy mushroom risotto complements its textured palate and lees complexity. Grilled line fish or seared scallops highlight the Chardonnay’s coastal freshness and mineral edge, and pork belly or creamy pasta dishes allow the wine’s acidity to cut through richer flavours without feeling heavy. For cheese, a mature brie or lightly aged gouda makes a natural match.
