Almenkerk Chardonnay 2022
Almenkerk Wine Estate is a family-run property in the cool-climate Elgin Valley, a region now widely regarded as one of South Africa’s benchmarks for Chardonnay. Set on an elevated plateau surrounded by mountains, Elgin benefits from lower average temperatures and regular ocean-cooled breezes, allowing grapes to ripen slowly while retaining acidity and aromatics.
Owned and run by the van Almenkerk family, the estate follows a thoughtful, hands-on approach in both vineyard and cellar. Farming leans toward sustainability, with minimal intervention and a focus on soil health. The Chardonnay is sourced from a single vineyard block on one of the coldest parts of the farm, enhancing precision and consistency. Natural fermentation in French oak (with a significant portion of new barrels) and extended lees ageing build texture, while avoiding excessive richness - a style that prioritises structure, minerality, and longevity.
Colour:
Bright straw with a subtle golden edge, hinting at oak influence and concentration.
Nose:
Citrus leads - lime and lemon zest - followed by white peach and fresh apple. Secondary notes of almond, vanilla pod and a light toasted character add depth, with a subtle saline edge.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with a fine, textured mouthfeel from lees ageing. Layers of citrus and stone fruit are supported by gentle oak spice and a distinct mineral line. The acidity is crisp and persistent, giving the wine clarity and drive rather than weight.
Finish:
Long and slightly pithy, with lingering citrus, toasted nuts and a refined, saline freshness.
- Food Pairing : The Almenkerk Chardonnay 2022 is particularly well suited to dishes where freshness and richness need to meet in balance. It pairs beautifully with grilled or butter-poached seafood - think salmon, prawns or scallops - where the wine’s acidity cuts through richness while its texture complements the dish. Roast chicken or pork also works well, as the subtle oak and nutty notes echo savoury flavours. For a local touch, creamy line fish or a lightly spiced Cape Malay curry makes an excellent pairing, with the wine’s citrus and mineral edge keeping everything lifted and precise.
