Tokara Reserve Chardonnay 2025
Tokara is situated in Stellenbosch on the slopes of the Simonsberg, where elevation, varied aspects and granitic Oakleaf soils give the estate’s Chardonnay a combination of ripe fruit, natural freshness and mineral character. The vineyards used for the Reserve Collection Chardonnay sit between approximately 300 and 360 metres above sea level, with deep clay-rich soils containing gravel and sandstone elements. The Tokara Reserve Chardonnay is made from the best-performing Chardonnay blocks, with only the free-run juice selected for the Reserve Collection. Barrel fermentation and extended time on the lees give the wine its creamy texture and subtle richness, while French oak provides spice and depth rather than simply an overt oak flavour. This is a Stellenbosch Chardonnay that combines generous Cape fruit with the freshness and structure needed for serious bottle development.
Colour: Light gold with a bright, youthful appearance.
Nose: Grilled lemon and ripe yellow citrus lead into fragrant mandarin blossom and delicate crème anglaise. Subtle toasted and creamy notes sit behind the fruit, adding depth without obscuring the freshness.
Palate: Full-bodied and textured, with ripe yellow citrus at the centre. The mid-palate is silky and creamy, with a gentle caramelised character and well-integrated oak. Fresh acidity and a subtle saline quality run through the wine, giving the richness definition and preventing the palate from feeling heavy.
Finish: Long and fresh, with lingering citrus, gentle oak spice and a distinctive saline note.
- Food Pairing : The richness and creamy texture of Tokara Reserve Chardonnay 2025 make it particularly well suited to grilled or roasted seafood, while its fresh acidity helps keep richer dishes lively. Try it with grilled line fish, sole meunière, roast chicken with lemon and herbs, creamy seafood pasta or soft, creamy cheeses. The citrus freshness works with seafood and poultry, while the subtle oak and creamy texture complement buttery sauces and roasted flavours.
- Drink before: Cellaring potential: At least 8–10 years. The wine’s acidity, saline freshness and oak structure should allow it to develop positively in bottle, although it is already approachable in its youth.
