Tokara Reserve Syrah 2023
Tokara is a prominent Stellenbosch wine estate situated along the Helshoogte Pass, where vineyards occupy elevated slopes with views across the Cape Winelands. Its Reserve Collection focuses on single-vineyard wines that express the character of their individual sites, combining a sense of place with a considered approach to winemaking. The Tokara Reserve Syrah 2023 comes from a single vineyard block on steep, rocky terrain particularly suited to the variety. The grapes were hand-picked in two passes to capture optimal ripeness. Around 30% of the fruit was fermented as whole bunches, contributing aromatic complexity and structure. After fermentation, the wine matured in barrel for a total of approximately 21 months and was bottled without fining or filtration. The result is a confident, finely textured Stellenbosch Syrah, bringing together dark fruit, floral perfume and savoury spice in a style that draws on both the richness of the New World and the restraint associated with classic Rhône Syrah.
Colour: Deep purple at the core, with a vibrant ruby rim, reflecting the wine’s concentration and youthful character.
Nose: Aromas of ripe plum skin, dark cherries and raspberry lead, followed by fragrant violets and the savoury character of cigar box. With time in the glass, subtle hints of rosemary and baking spice add further complexity.
Palate: Full-bodied yet refined, with layers of dark cherry and ripe plum supported by delicate spice and savoury notes. A silky mid-palate gives the wine an appealing smoothness, while fine, velvety tannins provide structure without overwhelming the fruit. The overall style is generous but composed, with enough freshness to keep the flavours focused.
Finish: Long and savoury, with lingering dark fruit, a hint of rosemary and gentle baking spice. The velvety tannins leave a polished, persistent impression.
- Food Pairing : Tokara Reserve Syrah 2023 pairs beautifully with rosemary-seasoned lamb chops or a slow-roasted leg of lamb, as the wine’s dark fruit and savoury herbal notes complement the richness of the meat. Grilled beef steak with cracked black pepper is another excellent choice, allowing the wine’s fine tannins and spice to work alongside the charred flavours. For something a little different, try spicy lamb kofta with yoghurt dressing, where the seasoning complements the Syrah’s peppery character and the yoghurt offers a refreshing contrast. It also works well with pan-fried calamari and chorizo, particularly when served with a squeeze of lemon to lift the dish’s richness.
