Terra Del Capo Sangiovese 2023
Terra del Capo is the Italian-inspired wine range produced by Anthonij Rupert Wyne in the Cape Winelands. The name, meaning “Land of the Cape”, reflects a philosophy of bringing classic Italian grape varieties and winemaking traditions into a South African context. The Sangiovese grapes are sourced from carefully selected vineyard sites in the Western Cape, where warm, dry growing conditions encourage full flavour development while retaining the variety’s naturally vibrant acidity. The winemaking approach focuses on preserving varietal purity and drinkability. Gentle extraction and measured oak influence allow Sangiovese’s distinctive, red-fruited character, savoury complexity and food-friendly structure to remain at the forefront. The result is a wine that combines the freshness and accessibility of the Cape with the elegance traditionally associated with Italy’s most famous red grape.
Colour: Clear ruby red with youthful crimson highlights.
Nose: Red cherry, wild strawberry and cranberry aromas lead the way, followed by subtle notes of dried herbs, spice, tobacco leaf and a touch of earthy complexity.
Palate: Medium-bodied and energetic, with flavours of sour cherry, red plum and redcurrant. Fine tannins provide structure without heaviness, while lively acidity keeps the wine fresh and engaging. Gentle oak influence adds nuance rather than dominance.
Finish: Clean and persistent, leaving lingering notes of red berries, dried herbs and a subtle savoury edge.
- Food Pairing : Terra Del Capo Sangiovese 2023 is particularly versatile at the table thanks to its bright acidity and moderate tannin structure. It pairs naturally with tomato-based pasta dishes, wood-fired pizza, grilled lamb chops and slow-cooked beef ragù, where the wine’s freshness complements rich flavours without overwhelming them. It also works beautifully with roasted Mediterranean vegetables and aged hard cheeses, highlighting the savoury character that makes Sangiovese such a rewarding food wine.
