Anthonij Rupert Blend 2017
The 2017 Anthonij Rupert Wines Blend comes from the L’Ormarins estate in Franschhoek, where decomposed granite and Oakleaf soils, combined with cooling mountain influences, help produce structured, age-worthy Bordeaux-style reds. The estate’s approach leans toward precision rather than excess - careful vineyard selection, hand-harvesting, natural fermentation, and extended maturation are all used to let site and vintage speak clearly.
Fruit for the Anthonij Rupert Blend is sourced primarily from selected Franschhoek vineyards, with each parcel vinified separately before final blending. The 2017 vintage was particularly favourable in the Cape, delivering concentrated fruit with firm natural acidity and refined tannin structure. The wine spent 24 months in French oak before extended bottle ageing prior to release, resulting in a wine that feels composed and mature without losing freshness.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a garnet edge, showing maturity and concentration in the glass.
Nose:
Blackcurrant, dark plum and black cherry lead the aromatics, followed by notes of cedar, cocoa powder, tobacco leaf and subtle fennel spice. There’s also a lifted floral note beneath the darker fruit profile that adds freshness and detail.
Palate:
Full-bodied yet controlled, the palate combines ripe black fruit with savoury spice and fine oak integration. The tannins are firm but polished, giving structure without heaviness, while the acidity keeps the wine focused and energetic. Cabernet Sauvignon brings backbone, Cabernet Franc adds aromatic lift and graphite-like detail, and Merlot rounds out the texture.
Finish:
Long and tapered, with lingering notes of dark berries, cocoa, cedar and gentle spice carrying through the finish.
- Food Pairing : The Anthonij Rupert Blend 2017 pairs naturally with richer, slow-cooked dishes where its structure and savoury depth can shine. Roast leg of lamb with rosemary works particularly well alongside the wine’s cedar and herbal notes, while grilled ribeye or beef fillet complements the firm tannins and dark fruit profile. The wine also handles earthy flavours comfortably - wild mushroom risotto or venison pie both bring out its more savoury side. For cheese, mature cheddar or aged gouda make excellent partners, softening the tannins while echoing the wine’s subtle cocoa and spice character.
