Produced by the acclaimed Kavalan Distillery, Kavalan helped place Taiwanese whisky firmly on the global stage through its distinctive approach to maturation and climate-driven whisky production. Located in Yilan County in north-eastern Taiwan, the distillery benefits from pure mountain water and a humid subtropical climate that accelerates cask interaction and flavour development.
Kavalan’s whiskies are known for their polished texture, vibrant fruit character and careful cask management. The Ex-Bourbon Oak expression is matured exclusively in American oak bourbon barrels, allowing the distillery’s naturally fruit-forward spirit character to remain at the forefront while layering in vanilla, coconut and soft spice from the wood.
Unlike heavier, peat-driven styles, this whisky leans into freshness, elegance and clarity, offering a more modern single malt profile that still carries impressive depth and structure.
Colour:
Bright golden amber with excellent clarity.
Nose:
Vanilla pod, coconut cream and honeyed oak lead initially, followed by notes of tropical fruit, citrus peel, green apple and soft baking spice. There is a delicate floral lift alongside subtle hints of malt biscuit and toasted almond.
Palate:
Smooth and rounded, with creamy vanilla and ripe tropical fruit balanced by gentle oak spice. Notes of pineapple, mango and pear sit alongside caramel, white chocolate and toasted coconut. The bourbon cask influence adds richness without dominating the spirit’s natural brightness and purity.
Finish:
Medium to long, clean and warming, with lingering vanilla, citrus zest and soft oak spice.
- Food Pairing : Kavalan Ex-Bourbon Oak works exceptionally well as a slow sipping whisky, either neat or with a few drops of water to open its fruit and vanilla notes further. Its lighter oak profile and tropical character also make it approachable alongside food, particularly glazed pork belly, roasted cashews, grilled prawns or crème brûlée. For a more relaxed serve, it pairs comfortably with hard cheeses or dark chocolate desserts without overwhelming them.
