Produced by Kavalan Distillery in Yilan County, northeastern Taiwan, Kavalan Concertmaster is a single malt that reflects the island's warm, humid climate and Kavalan's distinctive approach to whisky maturation. Established in 2005, Kavalan has become one of the most recognised names in Taiwanese whisky, producing single malts in an environment where the combination of heat, humidity and rapid maturation can create intense interaction between spirit and oak. Kavalan Concertmaster is initially matured in American oak casks before being finished in Port wine barrels. The Port cask finish adds layers of dried fruit, vanilla and gentle sweetness to Kavalan's naturally fruity spirit, while retaining enough freshness to keep the whisky approachable. It is bottled at 40% ABV and is a no-age-statement whisky, with the focus placed on the character achieved through cask selection and blending rather than a stated maturation period.
Colour: Rich amber-gold with a warm copper hue.
Nose: Expressive and fruit-forward, with ripe tropical fruit, dried fruit and sweet vanilla alongside caramel and hints of toasted nuts. A gentle spicy character adds definition, with Port-derived richness sitting behind the fresh fruit.
Palate: Smooth and rounded, bringing together tropical fruit, vanilla and caramel with flavours of dried cherry and subtle nutty sweetness. The Port cask influence gives the whisky added richness, while the underlying spirit remains fresh and fruity. A touch of white pepper and spice provides contrast towards the middle of the palate.
Finish: Medium in length, with lingering dried fruit, vanilla, gentle spice and a subtle dry oak note. The finish is warming without becoming overly heavy.
- Food Pairing : Kavalan Concertmaster works particularly well with desserts and dishes that echo its tropical fruit, vanilla and dried-fruit character. Try it with sticky toffee pudding, crÚme brûlée, dark chocolate and orange desserts, fruit tart or a mature hard cheese. Its gentle sweetness and Port-cask richness also make it an enjoyable after-dinner dram, served neat or with a small splash of water to open up the fruit and spice.
